Debenham Parish Council is pleased to announce the following winners of a Community Award for 2013/2014.
Many congratulations to all of you and a big Thank You from the community.
We are proud to recognise a group of young mums who decided to do something about an issue that they felt strongly about - namely a swimming pool for the village of Debenham.
Over the last 2 - 3 years they have worked tirelessly to achieve their goal and have had to endure many hours of form filling to apply for dozens of different grants to help fund the project. Despite some initial grant application refusals the group have persevered and have now virtually achieved the target required.
Matched funding is still being sought and community support encouraged even more, but the end is in sight and it is hoped that by the summer of 2015 we may have a pool ready for use in Debenham.
This award is to recognise the efforts of all those concerned with the project and a huge well done to everyone involved, this has been a mammoth task and an equally mammoth achievement that is well worth a community award.
The members of this group have been working away in the background to get the Debenham library relocated to the primary school. They have managed to raise the required amount of money for the move to take place, some £40,000 by applying for grants to various bodies across Suffolk.
Now the funds are available the final hurdle to get across is to agree the terms of a lease with the school.
This is yet another example of those in the community wanting to achieve something for the greater good and just getting on and doing it.
This group of volunteers have beavered away over the past couple of years and are now very close to achieving their objective.
Well done to all concerned with this group, a very worthy recipient of a community award.

Each month during the 6 winter months from October through to March, a group of volunteers willingly give up much of their Saturday to prepare for and run the Soup Lunches that take place here in Dove Cottage. Much of the lunch that is provided is also donated or has been made by these volunteers.
Most occasions are full and those attending enjoy a wholesome soup lunch, bread roll, and desert all for £5.00.
A draw adds to the excitement each time with prizes being donated which all helps to add more funds to the church coffers.
There are many who regularly attend these events, my family being one group who look forward to the warm welcome we are always given.
This is certainly an excellent example of putting something back into the community in an entirely selfless manner and these two couples are worthy recipients of a community award;
Sue and Stuart Beauchamp (Beecham)
Jan and Peter Holme
When Suffolk County Council divested itself of the running of the Youth Centre in Debenham we were very fortunate that members of the The Forge Church took up the challenge of keeping the centre open and used by the youth of the village.
Since taking on the delivery of the service, the numbers attending have increased dramatically and the centre now caters for nearly 200 young people when it opens its doors.
Debenham is extremely fortunate to have such a supportive group of people who are prepared to commit their time and energy to providing this much needed service. The success of their efforts is evident for all to see so we are very pleased to give this community award to the members of The Base. The award is thoroughly deserved.
Jane Simpson and Anna Richardson as 'retired' members, Chair and Vice Chair of the Friends of Sir Robert Hitcham Primary School still continue to put their energy into various fund-raising campaigns. Over the years the 'Friends' have generated thousands of pounds to be used for the school's benefit. The funds have been used to purchase all manner of equipment for the pupils.
Some of the more inspired ideas have generated huge amounts of money. The 'GoGreen' fabric recycling project alone has generated more than five thousand pounds over the last eight years. The latest 'Heavy Metal' day was also a great success. The Summer Sizzler, uniform sales and many other fundraisers continue to support the school.
However, it is the commitment, passion and awesome organising skills that we are celebrating here.
Well done and thank you.
